Making it Work #4 – Saying No and Hell No!

So why should you not release the weight? Play around with this – the answers are often not logical, and that’s appropriate! You can pose this with questions to yourself like:

  • If I release the weight, then I won’t be able to …
  • Or, if I release the weight, then I will have to …
  • Or, if I release the weight, then “he” or “she” or “they” will … (you’ll have to pose that question several times).

You may find yourself answering with things like: then I won’t be comfortable going to the buffet with my friends any more, or, I will have to buy all new clothes and I don’t have the money to do that (and this can be a belief, even if at the same time, you really look forward to getting new clothes!), or, then he will start looking at me, she will not like me any more, they will harass me.
You may surprise yourself with some of these answers, and that’s good, because they were hiding, and now that they are coming to the surface, you have the chance of doing something creative and new with them. Please make a list of any and all of these (and be prepared for the possibility that they may pop up later at any time) because you will want to address them explicitly when we get to the tapping.

___ I have made another list!

When I work with folks who want to quit smoking, the first thing I ask them to do is to give me five good reasons that they should NOT quit smoking. They generally look at me like I have lost my mind, but then those reasons come out. One typical one is that they don’t want to gain weight, they are quite sure they will gain weight when they quit smoking, because isn’t that what always happens? If that’s what they believe, then if their desire not to gain weight is bigger than their desire to quit smoking, they will not be able to quit smoking. So we need to know about that belief! Another one is that they won’t get any time out, because that’s what they use the cigarette break for. If they can’t claim that need, (which is socially respected, even if the smoking itself isn’t), then they will lose their only time out during work, or child care. Again, they know that they need the time out, at least on a subconscious level. If that need is not addressed, they will not be able to let go of the smoking, because it is doing something important for them.

So it is really important to listen to the beliefs you may be holding about why you should not lose weight. They are fundamentally trying to protect you. Understanding that, we can work to find other and better ways to protect so that you can end up being a healthier you!
